Watkins Glen State Park

Watkins Glen State Park is the most famous of the Finger Lakes State Parks located on the edge of the village of Watkins Glen, New York, south of Seneca Lake in Schuyler County. The main feature of the park is the hiking trail that climbs up through the gorge, passing over and under waterfalls. The park has a lower part that is next to the village and an upper part that is open woodland.
Watkins Glen State Park is in a 400-foot-deep narrow gorge cut through rock by a stream that was left hanging when glaciers of the Ice age deepened the Seneca valley, increasing the tributary stream gradient to create rapids and waterfalls wherever there were layers of hard rock. The rocks of the area are sedimentary of Devonian age that are part of a dissected plateau that was uplifted with little faulting or distortion. They consist mostly of soft shales, with some layers of harder sandstone and limestone

The gorge path winds over and under waterfalls and through the spray of Cavern Cascade. Rim trails overlook the gorge. Campers and day-visitors can enjoy the Olympic-size pool, scheduled summer tours through the gorge, tent and trailer campsites, picnic facilities and excellent fishing in nearby Seneca Lake or Catherine Creek, which is renowned for its annual spring run of rainbow trout.

  12. Great collection of photographs ! I will add to my collection. When you see these kinds of nature, you have to believe the existence of God.

    • You don’t have to believe in God to enjoy this glen. I’ve been there many times and I appreciate the fact that it was all water that carved the huge cliffs it is really fascinating and requires no higher power to be in awe of the glen.

  13. Awesome images, and it’s really nice.

  14. Not quite Ajay, looking at these pictures inspires quite the opposite effect- for me at least. It allows me to appreciate the effects of rationally sensible phenomenon without the normal encumbrance of the ^ associated dogmatic phraseology of others. But thanks for bringing it here, it wouldn’t be planet earth without someone like you! 😀

    • John, I am not religious at all, but when I see pictures like these, I have to believe God exists and that is okay. It seems popular nowadays to be against God, but lots of us are not those “dogmatic” types. We just want to give credit where we, as God loving individuals, think it should go. My “bestest” friend ever in the whole wide world is athiest and we just giggle at each other when we talk about things like this. Thanks for your input! 🙂

    • Getting beyond the theistic notion of God is in itself beautiful. Many people these days advertise themselves as “not religious at all” but they often don’t realize what the word references. Belief can rob us of experiencing the true beauty that is all around us. Daring to explore and discover, throwing away the God filter, and stepping out on the journey is far more beautiful and awe filled than holding onto the crutch of theism. These pictures expose us to the beauty of Nature, they call us to participate in that beauty, and that connection elevates us.

    for your posting.

  28. Pretty sure the square looking falls is not in watkins glen. I grew up near watkins and have been through the glen several times. I also suggest If you ever get back there to try havana glen in montour falls. Havana glen has a charectar all its own, with perfectly square cut stone. Only part of it is open to the public but I spent the summer last year exploring every inch of havana glen simply amazing.

    • Heck yeah this is exactly what I neeedd.
