Great Experience to Walk on a Glacier – Herbert Glacier, Alaska

Posted by on Dec 2, 2015 in Adventure | Comments Off on Great Experience to Walk on a Glacier – Herbert Glacier, Alaska

Herbert Glacier Trail is a 5 mile out and back trail (10 mile round trip) located near Juneau, Alaska and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking/biking and is accessible from May until October.
Herbert-Glacier-As glaciers retreat, plants move in to occupy the recently exposed land in a process called succession. This entire trail is a classic example of Ice Age succession, since you’ll pass from mature forest to scrub trees to rocky moraines as you approach the glacier. Herbert-Glacier-3There are picturesque views along the Herbert River, and while the hike is mostly flat and one of the area’s easier walks, it’s long—about 5 hours round-trip.  After four miles, the trail ends at a braided stream and gravel bar under Herbert Glacier. Herbert-Glacier-1If the water is low you can stand on the sand bar and look up at the ice. It’s truly a dramatic sight. Herbert-Glacier-7

A mall in Thailand that used to be awash with shoppers is now teeming with fish after the abandoned building was flooded. The New World Mall, in Bangkok, was closed in 1997 after it was found to have breached building regulations, before a fire in 1999 left it without a roof.

abandoned-shopping-mall-bangkok-1The fish thrived, quickly multiplied, and now fill the lower floors of the mall, swimming around rusty escalators and across the 5,000sqft floor. Shops around the mall sell fish food to tourists who visit, but throwing anything else into the subterranean lake is banned in order to protect the aquatic inhabitants.
